Namma Metro, also known as Bengaluru Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Bengaluru, India. Traveling in private cars, two-wheelers, Ola or Uber has become a tiresome task in Bengaluru due to the traffic these days. Namma Metro is a boon for those, to escape the drudgery of driving to or back after a tiring day at work. More and more commuters have chosen Namma Metro as their mode of travel. This includes people with disabilities.

The purpose of this research/study is to identify the constraints faced by blinds in using the Metro facility. The research has commenced right from entering the Metro station till they come out of the station, after completing necessary formalities in between. It also covers, accessibility of train-related information and services inside the station.

My colleague Varun R and I ran this research which was focussed on identifying challenges and to suggest alternative ways to make the Visually Challenged people (VCPs) journey as comfortable as possible. A special thanks to an NGO, Samarthanam trust for the disabled,  for their encouragement and extending full support until the completion of the research work.

To accomplish these objectives, we started with the basic principles of ethnographic study by visiting the blind hostels, computer training centers to understand the user. And then analyzed the current metro system to find any facilities provided to aid the blinds. This was followed by a series of user interviews to understand the demographic background of the user and Field research to observe the user, gather insights and pain points.

We collated all the observations & the accessibility policies across the world and came up with the possible/ improved solutions for the upcoming Metro stations to create a hassle-free & safe commute experience for the blind/VCPs.
